30 Days of Thanks 2013: Day 14

 Today I give thanks:

  • I have such great neighbors and friends.  My neighbor always brings me grits (I really love grits, especially hers)  when they have them and today, she also brought us "the best muffins" my kids have ever eaten.  Another neighbor and friend dropped off my God's World News magazines from a fellow home schooler that saved me a trip across town.
  • Michael actually swam today during his swim lesson.  One year ago, he cried to even get in the water and TODAY he swam!
  • For these young adults who are teaching my kids and for their professor, who is another one of those good friends that the Lord has blessed me with.

  • For all the servicemen and women, past and present who have served this great country we call our home.
  • For sunshine on my face and a warm breeze
  • For protection from the elements
  • For my brothers that I shared my childhood with

30 Days of Thanks 2013: Day 12

I've got a big thanks from yesterday!

A jug of bleach fell off the dryer onto the laundry room floor.   It could have been really bad, since I had all our clean clothes in baskets on the floor. I had just taken out JP's old work shirt out of the dryer and draped it on top of the basket. We only noticed a few spots on that one shirt and one on Tera's pajama pants. My white towels got a nice washing after mopping up bleach. The house smelled eye-watering clean and my jeans that I had on when I discovered the mess didn't get a drop (that I can see) on them. My kids really came to my rescue throwing me towels.  They learned an important lesson about only using white towels to clean up a spill of this kind. (Since they first came in with all the colored towels, and I sent them back for white.)  Instead of being mad, I'm so thankful I caught it before the whole jug emptied onto the floor and there was very minimal damage.

The leaves are falling, the weather is mild and I'm thankful!

I'm thankful for this little gift from God and his simple enjoyment of a pile of leaves...

Our thankful tree sprouting with thanksgiving and praise!

"I will give to the Lord the thanks due to His righteousness,
and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High."
Psalm 7:17

Bizarre and Unusual Fieldtrips: Cemetery

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

I have always loved cemeteries, even as a kid.  My mother's family are mostly buried in one cemetery behind my grandmother's church.  As a child, I have memories of decoration days with dinner on the ground and sometimes weekly visits to the graves.  We'd talk about who was buried where and how we were related.  My grandmother would tell me stories.

I associate cemeteries with stories and heritage.  I don't live near my family graves anymore,  but cemeteries still capture my attention with unknown stories displayed between the dates on a stone.  I want my children to have reverence for these places and to see the connections to their community that can be found in this quiet and serene place.  Not a place of fear...

Hence, the first in a series of many (I'm sure) of
BIZARRE and UNUSUAL Field Trips:

We met some friends at one of our local cemeteries.

NOTE:  Our group was small (6 total people), it is proper etiquette to call ahead and get permission for any large field trips to cemeteries.

Before we entered the cemetery, we went over etiquette for our visit.   This list is simple and fits the bill for every cemetery!

Each student brought a clipboard and pencil.   We made the below chart to tally the most prominent death dates we found on each tombstone.   This could easily be turned into a graphing project afterwards.

Each student picked a partner to walk around with.  Check out the etiquette rules above to see why!

After we tallied the majority of the graves, students looked for the following:

Can You Find?

  • Most unusual first names
  • Unique messages or epitaphs
  • Symbols-  (I had a sheet with some common symbols and what they mean.  Every time students found one, they would ask and we'd look it up.)  You can find lists here, and here and here
  • Oldest Person
  • Oldest Grave
  • Most recent grave
  • Different Geometric Shapes
  • Veterans from Different Wars (Write their name and the war they fought.)

We noticed intricate tombstones...

a marker to honor all those unmarked graves...

Veteran graves....

 hand-etched stones....

Each student received a tombstone hand-out and were told to sketch the one they found most interesting.  You can find that printable and other resources at this website

At the end, students found places where they just sat and looked at tombstones or sketch their surroundings.

Science:

Prior to your visit, use this resource to look at different types of headstone materials

Talk about disease, death caused by war and various other living conditions that could have caused deaths in the time periods (1917-1918- flu epidemic, major wars, higher infant mortality rates, etc.)

Math:

You can tally different aspects of information found on tombstones:  Men vs. Women, the time periods as we have done above, those over the age of 18 at the time of death vs. those younger...let your imagination run wild.  Graph your results.

Use basic subtraction to find out the age when the person died.

Art:

You can do sketches of tombstones that interest you or do a rubbing.  Please make sure to follow these guidelines when doing a rubbing.  Here's a great article discussing the topic:  Cemetery Rules about Rubbings Since we were not sure of the laws or rules in our areas regarding rubbings, we decided to sketch instead.

Writing:

Write your own epitaph poem:

Have students write a epitaph with the following structure:  must contain their name, the same number of syllables per line and each line must rhyme at the end.

30 Days of Thanks 2013- Day 10

  • I'm so thankful that although Daniel accidentally ingested something with almonds in it, he did not have any kind of reaction.  He checked the package, but it had no warning label.  He took one bite and then read the package again, when he saw the ingredient-ground almonds.  I felt bad that I took his word in the store that it was okay, but I won't always be with him everywhere.  This was a great lesson  for him in checking and re-checking labels.
  • I'm also thankful that the doctor has encouraged us to re-test him to see if he has outgrown his allergy (I didn't realize that could happen in this case), since he has had no other reactions since the initial one.  After this incident, I'm ready to do that.
  • I'm thankful for my nurse friend who lives across the street that I can call and who says call me anytime.
  • I'm grateful that I got to have some meaningful adult conversation today with the various people I met as we went about our day.
  • So thankful that Michael seems to be improving physically since he first started with his runny nose last Friday.
  • I give thanks that Michael had some little friends to talk to today,  as we went from art and then to the library.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts;
since as members of one body you were called to peace,
and be thankful.
Colossians 3:15

30 Days of Thanks 2013- Day 9

Giving thanks in spite of crazy circumstances can be a challenge, but that's when it's most important for us to do so.

  • I'm thankful the toilet didn't overflow when Michael was messing with it.
  • I'm thankful Tera didn't burn herself while pulling out a pan with hot water in it.  Honey flavored water went all over and into the bottom drawer of the stove.  It needed to be cleaned out anyway.
  • I'm thankful that we were only swarmed by fake lady bugs instead of yellow jackets on our field trip today.
  • I'm thankful for leftover beans that I could make into homemade bean burgers.
  • I'm thankful for safe travels as we go to lessons each week.
  • I'm thankful that JP kept Michael today so Tera and Daniel could have a middle-school type field trip.
  • I'm thankful for the smell of fresh baked bread.
  • I'm thankful that God's mercies are new every morning and for second (third, fourth, etc.) chances.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

30 Days of Thanks 2013 Day 7

Sometimes I'll hear a song and I'm overcome by it's message and how it's so true for my life story.

"Every heartache and failure
Every broken dream
You're the God who sees
The God who rescued me
This is my story"

I can look back over my entire life and see God's hand on me and working in my life.  It's overwhelming to think about...for that I am truly thankful!

When I see his handiwork, I'm amazed at this creative God who loves me enough to walk with me all through this journey.

The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped.
My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.

 Today, I'm thankful for:

  • weekends spent entirely at home
  • things that keep me warm--beautiful fires, electric blankets and hot apple cider.

  • good neighbors
  • God's presence and peace in my heart that passes all understanding
  • surprise desserts before dinner
  • Scrabble with two of my favorite people

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
