My little chef...

Tera has loved to cook for as long as I can remember. I set a goal for her this year to plan a meal once a month, make a shopping list and prepare it. Today we tasted the fruits of her labor. She picked Zesty Chicken, Sweetened Baby Carrots, French Bread and Cheesecake Brownies.

I have a tendency to help too much so I was very guarded in how much I did to help her. I asked her afterwards how she felt about my help. Tera was pleased with how much she got to do on her own, which was really almost the entire meal (minus handling the raw meat and removing the hot pans from the oven, I felt more comfortable being more hands-on during those instances).

Everything she made turned out great. I was so proud of the way she planned a well rounded meal and how confident she was in the kitchen. We can't wait until next month.

Living History Day at Sam Houston Schoolhouse

Finishing off our week unit on the Civil War, we were blessed to have a Living History Day at a local museum. We went in the morning, boy was it cold. I felt so sorry for the Confederate soldier who was barefoot during the reenactment. There was a surgeon with tons of tools to show, even dismembered limbs. Tera said every time someone asks a question, the answer is gross. Let's just say he gave descriptions of the procedures and tools that made you hurt. There were infantry soldiers from the Union and Confederate armies. We also learned about the different flags of the Confederate Army. The kids even got their picture taken with Robert E. Lee. They were having tours and activities all day-we just stayed a couple of hours in the morning. JP enjoyed the surgeon (because he had a straight razor) and even got a fake bandage with blood on it. We all had a great time. What a wonderful ending to a unit week.

Unit Week- Civil War and Solar System

Lapbook Activities- We did some Civil War lapbook activities.

Experiments
We did tons of experiments on space and physical science this week. What is the picture of the string you ask? A balloon rocket too fast for me to catch on film. I checked out a book from the library and the kids had to pick 2 experiments a day that they could set up and carry out themselves in addition to the ones I had planned.

Battling Boredom-Civil War style

We learned that soldiers battled boredom in camp so they would do things like: checkers, dominoes, chess and poker (gambling was real popular), whittle, take pictures, sing and play instruments, smoke and drink, and pray. We didn't gamble, smoke or drink but we did have a lot of fun with the other things. The dominoes picture Daniel took with my camera and Tera took the one of the plant.

Daniel and Tera participated in World Math Day 2010 on March 3rd online.

My baby!

My husband is just outdoing himself lately. This has been a rough week for me-(hormonally especially). It's unit week around here which is always crazy for me. Michael is teething so he wants to eat all the time except when I am eating, then he wants to fuss and crank. I've had lots of indigestion this week and I have been very tired. Yesterday was pretty rough. I laid down on the couch around 9 PM dozing while waiting for JP to get home. Then the phone rang, JP was in the driveway. I asked was it time for him to come home, thinking man I really passed out. He said he had a surprise for me and I thought maybe I forgot our anniversary that's next week. JP had taken some personal time off to come home early. He brought me some sweet treats and a crockpot meal to make for today, which he put in the crockpot before he went to bed and then put it on to cook this morning before I got up. He said he knew I had been having a rough time and wanted to come home early so I could get in bed for some extra rest. I do have the best husband in the world. We are not always so romantic and thoughtful which I guess makes these times extra special. Sometimes we go a long time in between doing extra nice things for each other. We just don't have the energy all the time to go the extra mile. But I am blessed and love my husband more everyday. He's the best!

Michael just turned 1 this past Saturday, he wasn't much for destroying cake but enjoyed his presents and goldfish crackers.
