52 Hike Challenge: Hike #21

Hike #21:  East Lakeshore Trail--Mizell Bluff Trailhead
Time: 1.5 hours
Distance:  around 3.0 miles
Temperature: Tropical storm humidity, but mostly dry

We took a chance on the weather this morning and it turned out perfect for a hike.  Overcast, slightly breezy, and mostly dry, if you don't count all the humidity in the air and on us in the form of sweat!  The rain didn't start until we had settled down at home for a snack lunch while we had our weekly family Bible study.

A cool accident of a picture...

Since I forgot to take our number picture--here are a couple of throwback pictures from Hike #18 and Hike #3 that adds up to 21!

Fun Fridays: All about Seeds

We started our co-op with Tera giving a "talk" to the boys about her Motte and Bailey castle diorama.

Our Bible lesson this month is on RESPECT!  So, we talked about personal boundaries, respecting others and respecting God.

It's too hot to be outside for a nature study, so we spent the morning studying seeds.

Dissecting black beans, talking about different kinds of seeds and discussing how they move was a great way to spend the morning learning.

Earlier in the week, I went on a seed hunt in our yard and our neighbor's yard.  The boys had a great time pulling apart the pods, cones and flowers to find the seeds.

We watched several videos:

Snack was easy--seeds, nuts, legumes and fruits!

Before we ate, we compared the different seeds from our fruits. The fact that bananas have seeds was surprising  to some!

Using only paper, scissors and tape, the boys needed to construct a "vehicle" that would help their "seed" (almond or sunflower seed) to move with wind.  This was a lot harder than it sounds!

We also pulled out a couple of science games--Brain Box Nature and Sciology.

A slow week...

Even though it was only a four-day week, I had anticipated quite a hectic week.  Because of a variety of unexpected things that happened, my crazy week turned out to be quite a slow week.  Despite the slower pace of outside activities, the kids were on top of all things school!  There were lots of awesome projects completed this week especially in our new unit--Medieval Britain.  In addition to some deep cleaning, I started a new bedtime and morning routine.  (More about that in another post!)

At the beginning of each unit, both Tera and Daniel are given a fairly long list of options to choose from when it comes to projects.  This unit has several required projects, but still lots of room for them to uniquely express the learning involved!

Daniel chose two different projects this week.  A message to decipher using ancient runes as the code and his version of "Dear Abbey", an ancient advice column.  I'm always sure to get a nice laugh when reading Daniel's projects!
