Simple Joys of Summer: Catching Fireflies at Night

How Could I Ask For More

There's nothing like the warmth of a summer afternoon
Waking to the sunlight, and being cradled by the moon
Catching fireflies at night
Building castles in the sand
Kissing Mama's face goodnight
Holding Daddy's hand
Thank you Lord, how could I ask for more

Running barefoot through the grass
A little hide and go seek
Being so in love, that you can hardly eat
Dancing in the dark, when there's no one else around
Being bundled 'neath the covers, watching snow
Fall to the ground
Thank you Lord, how could I ask for more

So many things I thought would bring me happiness
Some dreams that are realities today
Such an irony the things that mean the most to me
Are the memories that I've made along the way

So if there's anything I've learned
From this journey I am on
Simple truths will keep you going
Simple love will keep you strong
Cause there are questions without answers
Flames that never die
Heartaches we go through are often blessings in disguise
So thank you Lord, oh thank you Lord
How could I ask for more.

I have been occupying Michael with recyclables lately. An empty spice jar with an ice cube kept him busy forever. Then, he just wanted to play with the ice cube but you can always wipe up water off the floor.

Simple Joys of Summer- Programs at your local Library

We attended a program at our library on Saturday. It was a really cool experience. The magician scheduled, Scott Humston, just happened to be someone we knew from our days at Trevecca. A blast from the past. He is a great entertainer. All three of our kids loved the show. Tera was laughing louder than anyone- I could hear her on the other side of the room. He told tons of jokes throughout his routine, which had her rolling. She told me later, "Mom, I was laughing so hard I wanted to fall over, but I was too crowded." They practiced magic and told us jokes all afternoon. Tera was retelling the jokes she heard Scott tell and started cracking up all over again.
Check out your local library this summer, it's a way to have a great time and beat the heat!

Garden Update

We've got green peppers, tons of zucchini, and corn. Our pole beans are starting to come in. We had a feast tonight on corn. That was supper and it was so good, the kernels seem to fall off the ears into your mouth. We had one batch and then went back for more. Tera said, "that's the beauty of having a garden...if you want more, you just go pick it." I agree.

The last picture is from a set of 3 corn plates we found at a thrift store a long time ago. Tera loves these plates and everytime we have corn, they have to be on the table.

Simple Joys of Summer- Obsession

It seems like every summer, my kids become obsessed (in a good way) with something. One year it was puzzles-we did puzzles all summer long. Other years it has been k'nex, legos, etc. This year it has been all things Chronicles of Narnia. It started with this:

Daniel has been devouring these books all summer. Tera not as much partly because she has already read them on her own before.

Then these:

We've been watching the old BBC set of Chronicles and Narnia we recently found cheaply at a thrift store. They have also been watching the new Disney The Lion, Witch and The Wardrobe as well as Prince Caspian.

Then they pooled their money and earned the remainder to buy the audio dramas by Focus on the Family. They listen to these as they are falling asleep at night. We've always let them listen to a "tape" at night to wind down. This summer this is all they have been picking.

Finally, two friends suggested the game Stratego to us this summer. When we found out there was a Chronicles of Narnia version, it was our obvious choice. The first day they played this game 4 or 5 times. Now they are begging for someone to play with them.

With all the things kids get wrapped up into these days, Chronicles of Narnia sounds pretty good to me.
