Mosaic Reviews: FamilyMint

When I was in high school, I took all upper level math courses starting with Algebra 1 in 8th grade.  By my senior year, I was taking Calculus.  In all those years of math, I never remember one time being taught about managing my personal finances.  I never remember being taught the importance of budgeting, balancing your checkbook, setting goals, etc.  Our first year of marriage was a real eye opener.  Once you've had a bunch of overdraft fees posted to your account, because you didn't balance your checkbook, you learn some important lessons about personal finance.  Needless to say, I learned from experience.  I want my children to learn from example...and practice before going out on their own.  That's why I am pleased to be able to review the FamilyMint product!

 Making S.M.A.R.T. goals

FamilyMint is a money management program for kids aged 6-14 (The workbook is geared for ages 10 and up)  that teaches financial literacy.  It's an over-time approach to help kids learn to be responsible for their own money by helping them keep track of it.  Your children will learn budgeting, setting goals, how to write checks/deposit slips, and patience!

 Our practice checks and deposits

FamilyMint began as a collaboration between two friends with large families.  They decided to develop a product that would address a need they had for their own families and would help others as well.  Their website states the statistic:  "2 out of 3 high school seniors graduate without knowing the basics of budgeting?"  I was one of those!

I'm determined my kids do not leave my home without the ability to manage their money wisely.  FamilyMint began as an online option only.  Then the founders decided they "needed to go low-tech to teach the principles behind the app."  Having the workbook options adds flexibility, because you don't have to have internet access to use this system.  There is also a mobile app that works on any phone.

We used the workbook and online components of this program.  The workbook is not very long or tedious.  So, we worked through the workbook a chapter weekly.  I set up each kid an account online, and entered in their starting balances.  The online program was so easy to get started, my 12 year old basically could manage her own account with very little supervision.  The kids set goals, did transactions and really started thinking about responsible money management.  It also helped us to see  how much money our kids actually had and how they were choosing to spend it.

What we like:

  • Visual program- Kids make goals online and pick a visual to go along with that goal.  At a glance they can see what they are saving money for.
  • Parent involvement- Kids do all their money management under your supervision.
  • Versatile- You can use this program for incentive programs in homeschooling or family life.  One person uses it in their homeschooling so kids earn "teacher bucks or points".  Kids then trade in points for various rewards.  I'm excited to try this with our Summer Ticket Program this year!
  • It continues to reinforce good habits.
  • Encouragement aspect- Every time I deposit money into their accounts for jobs well done, there is a description box (to designate the funds).  I use that description box as a way to tell my kids how proud I am of their hard work.  When they log in, they'll see that "love note" from me.
  • It allows kids to take ultimate responsibility for their own spending/saving.  You don't have to be the bad guy all the time.  They ask for something, you respond with a question, "Well, do you have the money?"  Then encourage them to make the goal.
  • The online app does all the work for you
  • You can add as many children as you need!

What we would dislike:

The workbook is great and is designed to stand alone, but I don't think I'd want to do this program without the online application.  That's where all the fun is, in our opinion.

Financial literacy can only really happen in the home. That's where we teach our kids' good habits with money through the years.  FamilyMint is a program that can help get us going in the right direction.

FamilyMint has several options available:

A special introductory bundle--$29.99:

It includes the workbook and a LIFETIME subscription to the online application. (This is the best deal, in my opinion!)

Or an online only  PREMIUM option:
$24.99 (yearly) or $4.99 (monthly)

Or a basic online option:
FREE
(a 14 day Premium trial is included)

There really is an option available for everyone no matter what your budget!

Happy Places

After our crazy week, we decided to go to our "happy place".  We never had explored this part of Fort Loudoun before, so we stopped here on our way in.  We picnicked, explored, shared treasures (snail shells, rocks, etc.), talked, ran, jumped, climbed, and enjoyed God's beautiful creation and sunshine.  There was no one else there (except in passing on our way in and out).  It was totally quiet...well, as quiet as a family with three kids can be.  It was so refreshing.

When we needed to go to the bathroom, we headed over to the visitor's center at the fort.  (There are no facilities at the blockhouse).  We skipped rocks at the river's edge (Michael calls it the sea) and went for a short uphill hike in the woods.

The butt tree as my husband has named it!

You can't beat these views!

We stopped for ice cream cones on the way home...it really was a perfect day in one of my happy places!

We got to go back out to a different park today for church...it was cut short by a little boy needing to go to the bathroom and all the facilities were padlocked.  Oh well, it was nice for the time we were there.

“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”

That Kind of Week!

Let's see, can I even remember Monday?  It's been that kind of week!

Our anniversary was on Monday, but we had already celebrated over the weekend!  JP brought home a treat for the kids to share in on the celebration.

Tuesday ended with the below picture after a couple of hours in the emergency room.  Michael fell into Tera's bunk bed ladder and got a very big knot on his forehead.  I thought I was over-reacting and went outside to get JP.  I wasn't...so, we headed out very quickly.  They got us in and out fairly quickly, but we didn't escape being exposed to the flu from the kid diagnosed in the bed next to us.  So far, it's been 3 days and none of us are showing any signs of sickness.  We've stayed home the past 3 days (typical onset after exposure is 1-4 days) in case we were contagious and because Michael was on strict bed rest/brain rest (no TV or reading) for 24-48 hours.  I didn't realize just how much Michael ran and jumped everywhere until he wasn't allowed to do that.

Needless to say, we only got a couple of ABC activities done this week.

Some projects Tera and Daniel have been working on lately.

My little project from over the weekend...weeding and prepping a new bed in the yard.  Hopefully, my new lavender bushes are going to go here when they arrive.

Thursday, we celebrated "Pi" Day with pizza and blueberry pie!

We've been keeping a puzzle out on our school table.  This is our latest finished project.

This morning,  I woke to find that my email had been hacked and someone from a mobile device in PA had spammed my entire contacts list with various spam links.  I've taken steps to keep it from happening again and hopefully it won't.

It's been a long week, I'm ready for an uneventful weekend!

Happy Monday: Something Small

We love tacos at our house!

Since we have 3 kids, tacos can get a bit crazy. My husband found TacoProper Taco Holders on amazon.com.

I love these things! They hold the taco upright to make it easier to fill.  They are made in the good ol' USA!  I especially like how they hold each taco separately, so I can give a younger child one taco at a time.  There are four different colors and you can even hold your taco and eat it using the holderThat's just one small thing that makes me happy this Monday.  Hop on over to Crazy Casa K to find other Happy Monday posts!

"T"otally "T" week

A little bit of snow thrown into the middle of our week!

Our completed puzzle

 Turtle

It's been a humdinger of the week...we started the week with this:

Tuesday left me spinning...I'll re-post my facebook status from the end of that day:

A health screening at 6:55 AM, home to school the kids, out for flute lessons, lunch, community organization meeting, online video conference webinar, dinner for the kids, puzzle, read aloud and devotions...I'm totally peopled out! I'm glad most of my days aren't this hectic!

Then a couple more phone calls after that...I'm still recovering.

I didn't even do assignment sheets this week.   I've written all our work the night before on the dry erase board and the kids erase their subjects as they complete them.   It's been a nice change.

I realized that I cannot handle even small amounts of caffeine, even things labelled caffeine free have a bad effect on me.  Anxiety is my main symptom.  I've had a headache for 2 days now, so apparently I'm going through a withdrawal.   I think it's not worth it!  I hope I'm reminded of this the next time I have a craving.

Yesterday, Daniel graduated out of physical therapy.   WOOHOO!!!  Now, he just continues to wear his shoe inserts and stretches once a day!

Can I admit I'm tired?
