100th Day of School Celebration

I have a 5th and 6th grader this year, who wanted to have a 100th Day of School Celebration. There are so many ideas out there--if you are a 1st grade teacher!!! I had to really dig to come up with some age appropriate ideas for my two upper elementary/middle schoolers. We had some friends over just to make it more fun!

At the beginning of the school year, we made a 100 poster and attempted to record one thing a day.  This kinda fizzled out, but was a good idea anyway.

We started by seeing who could hold their breath for 100 seconds...well, or who got the closest.

Everyone had to close their eyes and raise their hands when they thought 100 seconds had passed.  Daniel was spot on and Tera was one second later.

I found this download  here on pinterest:

What can I do in 100 seconds?

How many times can you....clap your hands...say the alphabet....count to  ten...hop....stand/sit...blink....write your name.  Each student records their estimate before they stop, then the actual count afterwards.

We also flipped a coin 100 times to tally how many times it landed on heads/tails.
You can also make a graph recording the results.

Figure out the date 100 days after your birthday.

Additional ideas:

Write a story about how you would spend $100.

Try to do 100 sit ups/push ups

Roll a pair of dice 100 times.  Create a chart or graph showing the frequency of each number.

Jumping jacks 100 times or jump rope

Count forwards or backwards by 4s, 7s, or 8s.

See what you can build with 100 legos

I ran out this morning for the LAST time before Christmas!  WOO HOO!!!  Whatever I forgot, can stay forgotten or JP can go get it.  Hopefully, we don't pick up any bad germs between now and then.   We spent our afternoon working on various projects.

Something happened today that reminded me just how "rich" we are...

We have food on our table every meal, clean clothes, nice house, 2 cars that run, a good job for my husband so I can be a stay at home mom, beds for our children, heat, an education, running water, garbage service, and any other material thing I forgot.

But even more than that...we are rich in love, have an intact family, we like being with other, we have friends and good neighbors.

But even more than that....we are rich in God's grace, love and forgiveness,  in His peace and goodness, in His comfort, we've been saved from an eternity spent apart from the One who loves us more than anything else. Even if we lost everything else, we could still say how "rich" we truly are!!!!

Every day this week, the kids are working like crazy on their science fair projects...but we're finding some time for art, too! Tomorrow, Tera and I will spend the majority of the morning at the local community center filling food baskets.  She is SO excited!!!

This is probably the favorite Advent activity for my children. When my oldest two were babies, a lady in our church gave me this nativity set as a secret angel gift. All the figures are separately placed onto a wooden base. Even baby Jesus is separate from the manger. So every night the last twelve days before Christmas, the kids take turns putting out a figure. As the nativity gets fuller, they know Christmas is approaching. On Christmas Eve, we put out the manger and fill it with straw. Christmas morning we place baby Jesus in the manger after reading the Christmas story.  Christmas is coming..I can see it!!!

Advent- Dec. 15th

This has been an unusual day---most good, some annoying moments...

I started this day running a few errands.  I heard on facebook about a Haitian Market at a local church benefiting the Child of Purpose Orphanage.  Let's just say I was in heaven....we have a heart for Haiti and absolutely love Haitian art.  If you've been to my house, you've seen my Haitian items.  When I saw the painting, I knew I had to get it.   My husband fell in love with it, too.  We need to have it framed and I already have the perfect place for it.   They had so much metal work, baskets, ornaments...I wish I had one of each.  (I planned on keeping the things a secret from my husband, but I just couldn't wait)

Then, I came back home to get ready for the town parade and our cookie party afterwards.  We saw people lining up like an hour early.  Then, we looked out the window and the parade is happening right then.  JP rushed to get his clothes for work on and take the kids over.  We caught the very tail end of the parade.  I found out from a bystander that they changed the time the day before.  I wish I could say I rolled with it...but frankly I got a bit of an attitude.  I felt bad I had to call my friends and tell them they were missing it.  I'm so thankful that I have such gracious friends, who did just roll with it and came on over later for cookies and hot chocolate.  Thanks so much guys, we had a really great time!

We started the day working on cards and ended the day baking cookies. Tera had a two hour math team competition practice sandwiched in there.  Any other day, I'd probably be complaining a lot about how long of a day this has been.  Today, it doesn't seem right.   I've heard a lot about the tragic events that unfolded this morning. My heart is grieved and I'm truly speechless in this situation. The only thing I know is that God comforts the brokenhearted. I pray this for the families involved.

Some of the Truth in the Tinsel activities are a little more involved, so I have opted out of a couple this week.   Now, my older children are playing a game while I'm decompressing by writing this post.  Life is good!
