Fun Fridays: Victorian School and Tea Time

Fun Fridays are already the highlight of Michael's school year.  This morning the boys shared their book reports.  Michael did a book report in a box:  8 items that represent things from the book and descriptions.

Our Bible lessons this month are on contentedness.  So, we read about Jesus feeding the 4000 in the book of Matthew.

The boys made their first cake--a Victorian sponge cake (Tera made our cream ahead of time and we used store bought jam).  My friend set up it so nicely that each of our kids had their own bowls and each made one layer.  She is the stalwart of calm and patience!  Since we planned on having a Victorian tea later, the boys also helped to make cucumber sandwiches.

While the cakes were cooking and cooling, we talked about what it would have been like to go to school during the Victorian era in England.  Both boys picked out new Victorian era names for themselves.

Meet Meriweather and Frank....

Union Jack flags to color and Thaumatropes...

Our homework in anticipation of Victorian school day was to prepare a performance piece.  "Meriweather"   selected the Shel Silverstein poem, "One Inch Tall"  and  "Frank" performed an original drum selection!  These boys are so talented that neither ended up in the corner wearing the dunce's hat.

Tea time!  The cake turned out BEAUTIFUL and DELICIOUS!!!   Such a lovely experience!  Now, I need to go find a cute little porcelain teapot and fancy tea cups and saucers for our own home!

New Jersey Lunch

On the menu from New Jersey:

Savory Green Beans
Easy Blueberry Cobbler
Chicken and Stuffing Casserole

Did you know that New Jersey is the nation's leading grower of green beans?

New Jersey is nicknamed "The Garden State"  because of its fertile farmland that yields lots of fruits and vegetables!  Go New Jersey!!!

The Campbell's Soup Company was also founded in New Jersey.  Condensed soup was revolutionary for its time.   Yummy casserole....

Our dinner menu became our lunch menu due to time constraints later this evening.  That's how we have to balance life sometimes around here!

The long week...

A few of Michael's drawings from his art curriculum:  Learn to Draw

Science is a combination of nature studies and Ellen McHenry's Botany course this semester.

Roman mosaics for British history class

Daniel's version of Roman cheesecake.  A bit stodgy is how Mary Berry would describe them!  I can't wait for later periods of British history food delicacies!

Monday seems so long ago!  I got up first thing to go register our new car and realized that I didn't have the title yet to do that!   Boo!  Then, the title person at the car lot went on vacation.  So, hopefully we'll get that tomorrow and I can get that taken care of soon!

I felt like I got so much accomplished at the beginning of the week, but this week felt SO LONG!!  By Wednesday, Monday felt like last week!

Voting day here on Thursday and double karate lessons for Michael.

On Thursday night, Michael started to complain of a sore throat.  He woke up with it on Friday, so we had to reschedule our co-op day.  Good thing we did, because he started running a fever mid-morning that spiked to 102 that evening.  Besides congestion, he was fine by Saturday.  BUT he had to miss out on Tera's Bible study fun, because of our 24 hour fever-free rule.   He spent a lot of time resting in bed on Saturday listening to more audio books.

Just a couple of pictures of the hands-on object lesson that went with the day's lesson!

Tera was gracious enough to let Michael run the course after all the other kids had left.  She even let him chase her with the water gun!

I'm all caught up on planning for next week.  Resting today and  hoping next week doesn't feel as long as this one did!

Michael helped prepare "Chicken Delight" and "Apple Cheese Casserole"

Fresh tomatoes and sauteed squash were compliments of our small garden!

Hodgepodge of school and life

Tera made this delicious homemade pizza!

Tera and Daniel are having a great time in British history so far!

A message I have needed to remember over the last couple of weeks!

Reorganizing our craft cabinet

Tera received her award for making the 2017-2018 All-Academic Team for USA Fencing!

Our new van!!!!

Viking bread!  Ummm...yeah, the Vikings were a hardy people because their bread is quite robust--chokingly robust.

Michael's extra co-op homework was to read a book of his choice and do a book report project.  He chose to do a "book report in a box".  Basically, decorate the outside of your box including the name of the book and author.  Collect 8 objects to represent things from the book and write a description of each item. Michael really enjoyed making most of his items!

Lots of postcards! Just a few of our newest arrivals!  We are over halfway there!

This school year has gotten off to a great start!
